The PDF files, linked below, attempt to cover some of the story associated with the theft of the eagle, from atop the gravesite monument to Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth.

Ellsworth is widely regarded as the first officer, and "Hero", killed in the American Civil War... he was at the time of his death, and international celebrity, and a close personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln.

The monument's eagle was stolen, of all things, on the weekend of Memorial Day, 1997.

The man believed responsible, Gary Evans, was reputed to be a well-know thief of antiquities, and also allegedly murdered a handful of his associates in crime.

The eagle was recovered after our Sons of Union Veterans organization posted a photo of the eagle, on the web site of the Maine Antique Digest, as a missing artifact.

The eagle was returned within two weeks of our posting, and Evans was set-up in a sting, and cornered within a few weeks after that, thanks to the ability of the authorities to trace back through the line of people who had purchased, and resold the important piece.

Evans later confessed to some of his crimes, but jumped out of a police van, over the edge of a bridge, and died, before we could gain any information regarding other missing monument art, and valuables.
